J. Parks Hackney ( 1958 - 1966)
Following the death of Rev. Kersey, Rev. J. Parks Hackney, former pastor of the Minnesota Avenue Church, was called as interim pastor on December 1, 1957 and served our church during this interim period. February 2, 1958, the church unanimously called him to be pastor. Under his leadership, the church had completed an extensive remodeling and renovating program in an effort to keep abreast of the development in the Georgetown section during the late fifties and early sixties.
The transformation in the Georgetown area during this time period had been the type that had changed the old adage that Georgetown "consists of houses without streets" to one of "houses and streets." It is also a section of people who, for the most part, wanted to revive the ancient atmosphere of the old Georgetown and preserve the appearance and antiquity of the old Georgetown of gracious living. Here a ministry was needed and Rev. Hackney and the good people of the Georgetown Baptist Church were striving to provide this ministry and service to the community and were making great progress all the way. Rev. Hackney graduated from Elon College in North Carolina, the Baptist Seminary in Louisvillie, Ky, and the Golden Gate Seminary. He was ordained at Burlington, N.C. He served churches in Richmond, Va.,Siler City, N.C., and Pamplin Va. During the second World War, he was a Navy Chaplain.
